Hailed as the sport fishing capital of the world, Islamorada is a village of islands south of Key Largo and just north of Marathon. A quick internet search will lead you to countless articles on the rare opportunity to fish the backcountry and offshore saltwater all in the same day. It’s a big deal but wasn’t part of this trip so we’ll save that for another day.
As part of this road trip we had a single day to explore Islamorada. Here are a few things that caught our attention while we were passing through.
This is a neat little spot with live music, an area to feed the fish, and good food. Our dog, Professor Cashmere, was on this trip so we checked Bring Fido for low key, dog-friendly restaurants and landed at the Islamorada Fish Company. It’s a nice atmosphere with a view of the water and pretty sunsets. Everyone was friendly and our sever paid special attention to Cash. We had a lovely time.
Anne’s Beach is right at MM 73 on the oceanside. Offering covered picnic areas, parking, nearby restrooms, and shallow calm-waters it’s a great spot for kiddos and dogs.
Green Turtle Hammock Nature Preserve
This nature preserve has hiking trails, picnic area, a small playground area, and a kayak launch. I was excited that the trails were rather short and seemed manageable for the boys and our dog. Our visit was cut short so we didn’t get to see everything the area has to offer but it is a place I’d recommend and plan on visiting again next time we’re in the area. The entrance is kind of tucked away so you’ll have to pay attention once you’re close, it’s at MM 81 on the bayside.
I’m going to throw in Founder’s Park as something to add to your list. The way our day worked out we couldn’t take advantage of all they have to offer so we skipped it but it is on my list for whenever we’re in the keys. The park offers a long list of amenities including a beach, splash pads, pool, tennis, basketball, tiki huts, picnic area, and dog park just to name a few.
We had a great day exploring and with all of the new places we added to our list we’re already planning another road trip to The Keys.
You’ve heard of five star ratings. We use pineapples!
My mom has been wanting to take our 3 generations and see the Keys for years. We need to make this happen. Great info. Time to start pinning these Key posts!
Rebecca, that sounds like an amazing trip for 3 generations to take together!! Glad to hear the info is helpful.
I’ve always wanted to make it to the Keys too! Maybe the next few years it will happen!
