Bahia Honda State Park, Florida Keys

Bahia Honda Bridge Sunset

Bahia Honda State Park, Spanish for “deep bay” is located at mile marker 37 in the Florida Keys. Known for its breathtaking sunsets, crystal-clear water, and quentessitional Florida coastline, Bahia Honda is a dream come true for any outdoorsman.

Bicycling to boat tours, paddling to picnicking, snorkeling to scuba diving most anyone can find a way to joyfully spend the day in this slice of heaven.

An unplanned stop on our road trip, it’s now labeled one of our favorite family memories. A nice stop between Key Largo and Key West it was just 15 minutes from our hotel in Marathon.

Spanning one of the deepest natural channels, along the early 1900’s Overseas Railroad, the Bahia Honda Bridge was one of forty-three bridges linking mainland Florida to Key West. Common to Florida history the bridge was destroyed by a hurricane and later abandoned. Which in this case, is a beautiful story, leaving behind an amazing vista for beach goers, hikers, and passerby.

We claimed a cozy little spot with a picnic table, unpacked our lunch, and explored the day away. Far enough from the coastline to allow Professor Cashmere, our dog, to play but close enough to watch all three boys safely we were right next to the butterfly habitat and the foot of the bridge. Worth mentioning is the close proximity of showers and restrooms.

The amenities offered by Bahia State Park are unmatched and too numerous to list. We were limited only by time and plan to visit again for an overnight stay. While cabin camping is more my speed the park does offer tent camping sites as well as RV parking, and overnight boat slip rental.
There is no way to adequately share all that this beautiful spot has to offer in one short blog post. Please visit the Bahia Honda State Park website as well as the dedicated Bahia Honda Park Concession to plan your visit.
